The Northern politicians and lawmakers were against going to war with Mexico because they feared that any territory that the U.S. would acquire in that area would be turned into more slave states. The U.S. has already been maintaining a difficult balance between Free State and slave state and there were already a lot of slave owners who were making their way to Mexico.
