Estimate the number of steps you would have to take to walk a distance equal to the circumference of the earth. (we estimate that the length of a step for an average person is about 18 inches, or roughly 0.5 m. the radius of the earth is 6.38 ✕ 106 m.)

The formula for circumference is diameter x pi

so double the radius multiply by pi and divide by 0.5

Answer: 80,000,000 or 80 million

Explanation:

Given : The radius of the earth =
6.38*10^(6)\ m

Formula of circumference :-

C=2\pi r, where r is the radius.

Then, the circumference of the earth will be :_

C=2(3.14) (6.38*10^(6))\\\\\Rightarrow\ C=40.0664*10^6\ m

Thus , the circumference of the earth =
40.0664*10^6\ m

Also it is given that , the length of a step for an average person =
\text{18 inches }\approx0.5\ m

Then, the number of steps you would have to take to walk a distance equal to the circumference of the earth :-

(40.0664*10^6)/(0.5)\\\\=80.1328*10^6=80,132,800\approx80,000,000

Hence, the estimated number of steps you would have to take to walk a distance equal to the circumference of the earth. = 80,000,000 or 80 million
