Why are newborn infants given a single injection of vitamin k?

Vitamin K clots the blood and stops excessive bleeding. There is a blood disorder called vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB). It is thought that newborns do not get enough vitamin K from their mothers so this injection could prevent VKDB from developing.
