Let us call the original price of the shirt x, shall we?

Then 40% off means the shirt is now priced at 100% - 40% = 60% the original price; therefore, we have the equation

(60)/(100)* x=18.00
0.6x=18.00

Dividing both sides by 0.6 gives

(0.6)/(0.6)x=(18)/(0.6)
x=30.

The "x" is 30! Hence, the original price of the shirt is $30.
