The hormones responsible for increasing sodium ion retention are angiotensin II and aldosterone. Aldosterone is the main mineralocorticoid hormone. It is a steroid hormone produced by the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex in the adrenal gland. It helps regulate sodium and potassium levels in the body and also helps control blood pressure and the balance of fluids and electrolytes in the blood. Angiotensin on the other hand is a peptide hormone that causes a subsequent increase in blood pressure and vasoconstriction. It is also part of the renin-angiotensin system, which is a major target for drugs that raises blood pressure.
