The churchmen objected to the Ottonian system of church control that continued under the Salians because they thought the church should be independent and self-governing. The Ottonian system for managing the church extended to investing bishops and abbots with their offices, controlling the church (lands of a church belonging to a secular lord appointed by the king), and appointing secular officers to church lands.
