The water level in a rain gauge is 2 3/4 inches. A steady rain raises the water level by 1/8 inch each hour. When the rain stops, the gauge reads 4 inches. How many hours did the rain last?

4-2 3/4= 1 1/4
1 1/4= 5/4=10/8
10/8 divided by 1/8 = 10
rain lasted 10 hours

4-2 3/4= 1 1/4 (amount of water that rained into the gauge)
1 1/4= 5/4=10/8
10/8 divided by 1/8 = 10
So the rain lasted 10 hours
