The second party system began during the 1830s when professional politicians of the Middle class experience created the Whig Party in disapproval to the suppressing growth of the democratic party under Andrew Jackson. During the 1840s, whigs and democrats competed for appeal to different cultural groups making a very vigorous period of powerful political debate, expansion of the electorate, a rise in party competition and appeal to cultural politics. American politics in the early 1840s was becoming very separated due to the different ideas and thoughts over states rights and slavery.
