2x - (x + 6)
The first step is to multiply every term inside the parentheses by -1.
2x - x - 6
Now combine like terms.
x - 6
Done.

To simplify this, we first need to distribute the negative sign to the (x+6). It's easier to see if we rewrite the negative as -1:
Now combine like terms:
