2x - (x + 6)

The first step is to multiply every term inside the parentheses by -1.

2x - x - 6

Now combine like terms.

x - 6

Done.

To simplify this, we first need to distribute the negative sign to the (x+6). It's easier to see if we rewrite the negative as -1:

2x+(-1)(x+6)=2x+(-1)*x+(-1)*6=2x-x-6

Now combine like terms:

2x-x-6=x-6
