Veronica went to the local convenience store to buy bread, milk, dishwashing liquid, and paper towels. The table below shows the cost for each item, including tax. Veronica gave the cashier a $10.00 bill. The cashier handed her 3 quarters and 4 pennies in change. Veronica thought she should have received more change.

Which mathematical explanation best supports Veronica's claim?
The cashier scanned the milk twice.
The cashier scanned the bread twice.
The cashier handed out 4 pennies instead of 4 dimes.
The cashier did not scan the dishwashing liquid.

Answer:

Cashier scanned the bread twice.

Explanation:

= 2.49 + 2.19 + 1.47 + 0.87 = 7.02

= 7.02 + 0.75 = 7.77

= 7.77 + 0.04 = 7.81

With 2 dollars and 19 cents leftover, even if the pennies were changed to dimes, youd still have only get up to 8.17 which still leaves 1 dollar and 83 cents leftover.

With that eliminated what could have the cashier miss-scanned? The paper towels are incorrect because 1.47 + 7.81 doesnt make 10 dollars

The dishwashing liquid isn't right either, because 0.87 + 7.81 doesn't make 10 dollars aswell.

The milk is also incorrect because 2.49 + 7.81 doesnt make EXACTLY 10 dollars. The bread is to correct answer bevause 2.19 + 7.81 equals exactly 10 dollars.

Hope this helps :)
