I don't find using the 4 step method for every single equation is necessary, but on an equation that is tricky, or difficult to understand. Using the 4 step method will really help. The first benefit of using the 4 step method, especially on a difficult question, is the fact that in order to use the method properly, you need to re-read the problem enough times to understand what it's saying. When you understand what it's asking you do to, you can come up with a plan and execute it. The second benefit of using the 4 step method is the final step, if you think you have the answer, but not too sure, looking back and really thinking about if your answer makes sense, and if you did what the question is asking can really help you get more assurance that you're answer is correct.
