I'm going to rewrite the equation assuming this is the correct form:

8 - (b)/(4) = 5 \\ewline -8 + 8 - (b)/(4) = 5 - 8 \\ewline (-4)\cdot -(b)/(4) = -3 \cdot (-4) \\ewline b = -12
