Hi. First, you need to find the area of the inner shaded area and the outer area.

Find the inner shaded area: 4cm x 5cm = 20^2
Find the outer area: 7cm x 8cm = 56^cm

Okay now we subtract

56^2 - 20^2 = 36^2cm

Hope this helps.

Take care,
Diana

First you have to find the area of the WHOLE BOX. So you multiply,
8×7=56
Then find the area of the small box,
5×4=20
It says take away the area of the small box from the whole box and you should do just that: 56-20=36
The area of the shaded region is 36cm²
