salad bowls aren't completely mixed in like your still have individual uniqe parts that make up the overall product (tomatoe, onions, lettuce, etc.)

examples :

the general population could be an example (chinese, european, african-american)

urban cities also are all unique with all the different types of cars/transportation it contains

Historians use the term salad bowl instead of the more traditional "melting pot" b/c although all the ingredients come together in a salad they maintain their original state. A melting pot would imply everyone conforms into the whole (that would be the U.S). One example is how many people bring their traditions from home to the U.S such as food and holiday. A better analogy is how some come to the country without learning the language and therefore speak their native one.
