Early American settlers were usually very religious. Therefore, thoughts of God, salvation, sin and Hell were part of their everyday living. Moreover, priests played a very important role in their community. This meant that Edwards was seen as an authoritative, important figure that should be listened to. Moreover, he had a commanding presence, and his speech was full of energy, emotion and intensity. All of these factors contributed to the success of the speech and persuaded the settlers of its truth.
