American industry grew tremendously after the Civil War. In the Northeast, Midwest, and plains, there were several hubs for agricultural and industrial growth. Between the mid-1860's and the late 1870's, steel production increased by 1,000 percent, railroad coverage doubled, and the amount of materials transported by freight tripled. The population more than doubled.
