Why is it important to be able to distinguish between events in a cause and effect relationship and those that are correlated

A correlation between variables, however, does not automatically mean that the change in one variable is the cause of the change in the values of the other variable.Causation indicates that one event is the result of the occurrence of the other event; i.e. there is a causal relationship between the two events

Because if events are correlated then that means there are more factors than just cause and effect, however, in a cause and effect relationship there is one part leading to another and then the cycle just continues of one leading to another, there is usually not an end in a cause and effect relationship because that one cause could lead to multiple causes and multiple effects.
