The importance of anonymity in a mailed survey is essentially important when the subject it deals on is regarding personal issues and broader public issues like immigration and religion. If the person who is surveyed is forced to reveal his identity, he may not be truthful in his answers for fear of backlash by any fringe group or the public in general.
