Under high-power lens, onion root tip appear as large, rectangular interlocking cells. It is clearly visible that cells are surrounded by distinct cell walls. Each cell has a dark stained nucleus. Large vacuoles are also observed in the cells. Small starch granules are also present inside the cells within the cytoplasm. Since root cells do not take part in photosynthesis, no chloroplasts are observed.

I found an online photo of the root tip and based on the article I read, a thin slice of onion root was placed one a microscope slide and stained so that the chromosomes will be seen. The microscope used was a light microscope. A picture was taken and digitized to make it accessible in the computer.

The root tip contained cells that are under different phases of the cell cycle. Out of the 36 cells observed, 20 cells were undergoing Interphase, 10 cells were undergoing Propase, 3 cells were undergoing Metaphase, 2 cells were undergoing Anaphase, and 1 cell was undergoing Telophase.
