Reconstruction changes the south how did african american citizens take advantage of their newly granted political rights and what affect did they have on american politics

During the 1870's over 500,000 black men received the right to vote in the South. Although there was opposition and voter suppression, black voters were able to make a difference in political elections that helped their communities by electing politicians responsive to their needs.
