By 1862 the Union changed it’s strategy to the “total war” strategy. This strategy consisted of destroying the Old South and the institution of slavery. After this, from 1862 to 1865 the Union Army staved off invasions and attacks, the Union went into the rivers and compromised the slave states by taking the river fleets, this way they also destroyed the economic infrastructure of the South.
