the ocean is at 0. So 24 ft below the surface is -24...and he dives down another 18 ft.......-24 - 18 = - 42.
so now he is at -42 or 42 ft below the surface

24 feet is the starting point, must account for it since its below the oceans surface, straight down 18 is just 18 more feet down. 42 feet below the oceans surface
