The part of the plot that provides the reader with background information introducing the setting, characters, and main conflicts. The exposition usually occurs at the beginning of a novel or story and may be short or long. the start of the story, the situation before the action starts.

In any story, the plot undergoes 6 stages: the exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. Exposition is the very first phase. This is the introductory phase, where the narrator talks about the characters' background slowly. It is also here where the setting and mood of the story are hinted. By reading as early as in the exposition, you will know the genre of the story.
