Beneath Florida are structures made up mostly with carbonaceous rock such as limestone and dolostone overlaid with mixtures of sand and clay. When groundwater passes through this structure, the carbonates are slowly dissolved and thus creating sinkholes.

For centuries, sinkholes have found popular use as disposal sites for various forms of waste.
