Let J represent Jim
A represent Alvin
B represent Becca
Jim is 3 inches taller than Alvin, and then we translate this into an equation which is:
J=3+A
Alvin is twice as tall as Becca, and also translate thus into an equation:
A=2B or B=1/2A
Next,
The sum of their heights is 153 inches which is:
J+A+B=153
B=1/2A
J=3+A
Substitute the three of them to get this new equation:
3+A+A+1/2A=153
3+2.5A=153
Subtract 3 to each side
3+2.5A-3=153-3
2.5A=150
Divided 2.5 to each side
2.5A/2.5=150/2.5
A=60 inches
J=3+A
J=3+60
J=63 inches, so Jim is 63 inches tall. As a result, D is your final answer. Hope it help!
