The "distance formula" an extension of the Pythagorean Theorem is:
d^2=(x2-x1)^2+(y2-y1)^2 in this case:
d^2=(-8-7)^2+(-9--1)^2
d^2=(-15)^2+(-8)^2
d^2=15^2+8^2
d=√(15^2+8^2)
So the answer is 15^2+8^2
