The epicenter is the location where the greatest damage associated with an earthquake occurs.
The distance of the epicenter of the earthquake from the seismic station is calculated according the difference in arrival time between the two types of seismic waves (S waves and P waves) . The further away an earthquake is, the greater the lag time between the detection of the S waves relative to the P waves.
