I can't figure out how to group these terms with both variables on each side-example-1

8w + 4w = 32 - 4w + 4w
12 w = 32
w = 32/12
w = 8/ 3

You would add 4w to each side, making the simplified form  12w = 32. If you wanted to solve for w you go one step further you would simply divide each side by 12.  Hope this helps : )
