Arnold van Gennep (1873-1957) was a German researcher that dedicated part of his life to studying the cultural environment in which society evolved. One of his studies was about the rites of passage. For him, a rite of passage was all those kinds of rites that come with a period of change. It could be the change of age, place, job or status.
