The cost of jackets is proportional to the number of jackets bought. Mr. Jackson bought 9 jackets and paid a total of $540. Write the equation which can be used to find the total cost, y, for any number of jackets, x, bought?

This is the concept of algebra, we are required to find the equation relating the total cost of jacket,y , for any given number of jackets,x , bought.

From above we are told that 9 jackets cost $540. the cost of one jacket will be:

cost=[total price]/[number of jacekts]
=540/9=$60
the total price is given by:
total cost=[number of jackets]*[price of one jacket]
thus;
total cost=y
number of jackets=x
price of one jakcet=$60

thus;

y=60x

the equation of finding the total cost, y, of any number of jackets, x, is:
y=60 x
