Polybus and Merope were a king and queen of a neighboring nation of Thebes. Originally Oedipus's parents King Laius and Queen Jocasta left Oedipus to die in the mountainside because of what a prophecy told them. Shepherds found Oedipus and brought him to King Polybus and Queen Merope and they raised him.
