Once the heat radiated by the surface is equal to the sunlight being absorbed by it the surface stops heating up, and temperatures remain relatively stable. ... On the Earth and other planets with an atmosphere, so-called greenhouse gases can trap part of the heat radiated by the surface, keeping the surface warmer.
