STORY IS BELOW! :)

This is my response, let me know what you guys think! Feel free to leave any suggestions if I should add or take out anything in my response or just leave it as it is! :D

The reason why Mrs. Jong wants Vincent to throw away the chess set given by the church as a Christmas present is because she wanted the chess set to be used by Waverly but Waverly did not approve the chess set. I know this in light of the fact that in the story, it states, “Vincent got the chess set, which would have been a very decent present to get at a church Christmas party, except it was obviously used and, as we discovered later, it was missing a black pawn and a white knight. When we got home, my mother told Vincent to throw the chess set away. “She not want it. We not want it,” she said, tossing her head stiffly to the side with a tight, proud smile.“ Mrs. Jong mainly wants a chess set for Waverly for her to be able to practice, gain skills and be a champion at chess. But after discovering missing pieces, the kindest way she thanked the lady for giving the present, as stated in the story, ”My mother graciously thanked the unknown benefactor, saying “To good. Cost too much.” It could be that as Waverly observes what people say and their actions, her mother is doing the same as the people at the fish market asking for the best fish. The story states, ”Inside, the butchers with their bloodstained white smocks deftly gutted the fish while customers cried out their orders and shouted, “Give me your freshest,” to which the butchers always protested, “All are freshest.” This demonstrates the actions of people asking for the best and finest fish at the market. This again implies to Waverly´s mother because she wants the best chess set for her that doesn't have any missing pieces. In conclusion, this is the reason why I believe Mrs. Jong wants Vincent to throw away his chess set.

Answer:

Mrs. Jong is a proud woman who refuses to accept and keep a secondhand gift because she considers it an insult. In this regard, she requests that Vincent chuck the chess set, saying, "She not want it. We not want it." It's not something we desire. because the chess set is visibly used and has missing pieces. Mrs. Jong wants Vincent to have a chess set in excellent condition, just like the other customers at the market who yell out their demands and say, "Give me your freshest!" Furthermore, because the book provided with the chess set is written in American rules, she believes Vincent will be wasting his time playing it.
