John spent $24 of his savings on a watch and 1/5 of the remainder on a t-shirt. He still had 2/3 of his savings left. How much were his savings at first?

Answer:

$180

Explanation:

1/5 = 3/15

2/3 = 10/15

3/15 + 10/15 = 13/15

1 - 13/15 = 2/15

$24 = 2/15

$12 = 1/15

$12 x 15 = $180

24+0.2(x-24) = 2/3x

24+0.2x-4.8 = 2/3x

19.2 = 7/15x

19.2/x = 7/15

288/x = 7

288 = 7x

x = 41.14
