The Crust: the outer layer of the Earth is called the crust, which can be the oceanic crust or continental crust. Continental is a lot thicker, around 20–30 km but up to 80 km if it is below a mountain belt. Oceanic crust is thin, around 7 km thick and a lot younger and denser.
