Statement Problem: Use the least common denominator to enter equivalent fractions with a like denominator and then find the sum. enter your answer in simplest form.

\begin{gathered} 5(5)/(8)= \\ + \\ 6(6)/(7)= \end{gathered}

Solution:

First, we would change each of the mixed fractions to improper fractions;

\begin{gathered} 5(5)/(8)=(45)/(8) \\ + \\ 6(6)/(7)=(48)/(7) \end{gathered}

Then, the least common multiple of 8 and 7 is;

56

So, the sum of the fraction is;

\begin{gathered} (45)/(8)+(48)/(7)=(315+384)/(56) \\ (45)/(8)+(48)/(7)=(699)/(56) \\ (45)/(8)+(48)/(7)=12(27)/(56) \end{gathered}
\begin{gathered} (45)/(8) \\ + \\ (48)/(7) \\ = \\ (699)/(56)=12(27)/(56) \end{gathered}
