Why is it ironic in "The Petrified Man" when Mrs. Fletcher declares "Well! I don't like children that much"?

This is because there are instances in the story where it is said that Mrs.Fletcher loves children.

Answer:

A) She is about to have her own child.

Step-by-step explanation:

"Petrified Man" is written by Eudora Alice Welty, an American novelist, and short-story writer. In Petrified Man, the main characters are Mrs. Fletcher and her beautician Leota. They both gossip about other people. Mrs. Fletcher soon becomes the talk of the town because of her baby belly. And she despises having children of her own. When Mrs. Fletcher declares "Well! I don't like children that much" it is ironical because Mrs. Fletcher is about to have child of her own.
