One of Canada's tallest trees is a Douglas fir on Vancouver Island. The angle of elevation measured by an observer who is 78 m from the base of the tree is 50 degrees. How tall is this tree to the nearest meter?

We solve this above question using the Trigonometric function of Tangent

tan θ = Opposite/Adjacent

Opposite = Height of the tree = ?? = x

Adjacent = Distance from the base of the tree = 78m

θ = 50°

Hence:

tan 50 = x/78

Cross Multiply

x = tan 50 × 78

x = 92.956780222m

Approximately = 93 m

Therefore, the tree is 93 meters tall
