Given: The main sources of news and the number of adult as shown in the table

To Determine: The number of adults whose sources of news is the internet or radio

Solution

Note that there are 44,000 adults living in Oak City

Step 1: Add all the adults gotten from the sample

T_{otal\text{ adult from the sample}}=58+88+133+24+45
T_{otal\text{ adult from the sample}}=348

Step 2: Add up the number of adult for internet and radio from the sample

\begin{gathered} T_{otal\text{ number of adults from the sample\lparen internet and radio\rparen}}=88+24 \\ T_{otal\text{ number of adults from the sample\lparen internet and radio\rparen}}=112 \end{gathered}

Step 3: Calculate the number of adults whose main source of news is internet and radio using the sample

F_{raction\text{ of the internet and radio from the sample}}=(112)/(348)

Let us use the fraction of the sample as an inference to the total number of adults in Oak City. Therefore, the number of adults whose source of news is internet and radio in Oak City would be

T_{otal\text{ adult sources from internet and radio in Oak City}}=(112)/(348)*44000
\begin{gathered} T_{otal\text{ adult sources from internet and radio in Oak City}}=0.32184*44000 \\ T_{otal\text{ adult sources from internet and radio in Oak City}}=14160.9195 \\ T_{otal\text{ adult sources from internet and radio in Oak City}}\approx14161\left(nearest\text{ whole number\rparen}\right? \end{gathered}

Hence, the total number of adults whose main source of news is internet and radio to the nearest whole number is 14161
