Americans at the time believed in a principle called Manifest Destiny. This was the belief that America should expand from sea to sea

The westward expansion (A.K.A Manifest Destiny) was believed, by the Americans, that they could claim that land so they could spread their government and rule westward.
They also believed they were protected by a higher being, Providence.
