I would say political strength, military strength, and industrialization. Shared language is definitely no, and terrain might slightly influence it, but not really.

During 1800 Europe only had two big cities London and Paris with five million population by 1900 London alone had six million population and because of these development Europe become a dominant force in the world during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
