Dale watched a beetle and a spider on the sidewalk. The beetle crawled 8/10 of a yard and the spider crawled 4/10 of a yard. How much farther did the beetle crawl than the spider?

To find:

which one crawled more and how much more.

Solution:

Here, the denominator of both fraction is same. So, the fraction with greater numerator is greater.

Therefore, the beetle crawled more than the spider.

The difference between their crawled distance is:


(8)/(10)-(4)/(10)=(4)/(10)

So, the beetle crawled 4/10 of a yard more than the spider.
