In the story "Marriage is a Private Affair" written by Chinua Achebe, the readers witness a conflict among father and son; with the underneath dynamics between tradition, modernity and change.

Okeke is a conservative father, and he's a keystone in the story for Achebe's purpose to convey what motivates change in traditional institutions; manifested in the story when Okeke finds out he has 2 grandchildren, thus his views of tradition change significantly, and then he's more worried about the consequences of his previous stubbornness, such as being isolated from his grandchildren.
