How can the relationship between America and Great Britain be characterized during Madison's presidency?

Seeing how Madison unilaterally declared war on Great Britain simply on a set of excuses with the sole aim of annexing Canada - the relationship could be described as 'unstable'.
Madison did not make many friends on either side of the United States - Canada border, either as well as creating deeper rifts within the United States politically and geographically.
