Width is 1 feet shorter than the length, b = x-1

The area of the rectangle is 12 sq feet.

The area of a rectangle is given by :

A = length × width

So,


x(x-1)=12\\\\x^2-x-12=0\\\\x^2-4x+3x-12=0\\\\x(x-4)+3(x-4)=0\\\\(x+3)(x-4)=0\\\\x=-3\ and \ x=4

Neglecting the negative side, the length of the rectangle is equal to 4 feet.
