How is genetic material transmitted to new cells?

In humans the genetic code is passed on to new cells by mitosis where a cell divides into two identical daughter cells by the chromosomes in the original cells replicating then they split apart. Then each chromosome that was split apart produces a new cell as the cytoplasm divides.
