Energy waves are graphed in the picture attached.

The crests are defined as the peaks of the wave which in the graph correspond to the upper bounds, while the troughs represent those areas in the graph were a lower bound is reached.

The distance between two consecutives crests is known as the wavelenght, as it measures the distance between the same point of the cycle in two different waves and hence it represents the distance required so that the whole cycle happens in between.
