Total number of pennies in the jar

let the number of pennies in bigger pile

Now,


\text{x}+\text{y}=24

as
\text{x}=2\text{y}


2\text{y}+\text{y}=24


3\text{y}=24


\text{y}=8


\text{x}=2\text{y}


\text{x}=2*8


\text{x}=16

Hence there are
16 pennies in larger pile.
