Melancholic perhaps.The narrator is sad because of the loss of his beloved one.He tries to concentrate in reading to forget his sorrows but he cannot.He is alone.Loneliness after such a loss surely indicates nostalgia and melancholy .there is a lamentation also so the mood is gloomy as usual in Poe.
